Driver strikes Capitol Police cruiser, taken into custody

In an attempt to stop the suspect, Capitol Police fired shots. The windshield of the suspect's vehicle, which bore Maryland license plates, had several bullet holes in it.

The woman was stopped in her auto at Washington and Independence avenues and a short foot chase followed before she was taken into custody.

"All of a sudden, we heard one shot, and two shots right after that - just like boom, and then boom, boom - and the police were just swarming", Yanta told CNN.

Top aide to President Donald Trump leaves administration
The White House is experiencing a major staff-shakeup since the forced resignation of Michael Flynn as national security adviser. A source familiar with the situation added that "getting that coalition on the outside to support this is significant".

The driver was taken into custody. During fair weather lawmakers often walk outside and cross Independence Avenue from the Rayburn building as they head to the Capitol, and the area on the corner of the Washington Mall is often crowded with tourists.

The disruption happened near the end of the morning rush hour and prompted a large police response just as lines of people were waiting to get into a nearby congressional office building. Temporary lockdown was placed on some of the House office buildings in the vicinity, but the lockdown has been lifted.

On March 19, a driver reportedly pulled up to the White House and claimed to have a bomb in the auto early Sunday. The driver was taken into custody and security was upgraded at the White House.

And in 2013, Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist from CT, was shot and killed by Capitol Police officers in her vehicle outside the Hart Senate Office Building.

The driver made a U-turn and fled the scene as officers were trying to stop the vehicle. Her family filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the Secret Service and Capitol Police.
