Turkey hits Kurdish areas in Iraq's Sinjar, northeast Syria


A Syrian Kurdish militia force said the strikes hit a media center, a local radio station, a communication headquarters and some military posts, killing an undetermined number of fighters in Syria's northeastern Hassakeh province.

Turkish warplanes struck Kurdish militant positions in Iraq and Syria in an operation meant to disrupt the rebels' supply lines and prevent them from infiltrating Turkey.

Zardasht Shingali, a spokesman for the YBS, said the strikes lasted three hours and hit five of his group's positions in the area.

The targeted regions have become "terror hubs" for the PKK, which were used as an ammunition and terrorist source for PKK attacks within Turkey, the statement added.

The strike on Karacok in Syria was confirmed by YPG, a Kurdish militant group that Turkey says is an extension of the PKK.

Turkey has long claimed Iraq's Sinjar region was becoming a hotbed for PKK rebels.

The air strikes in Syria targeted the YPG - a key component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are backed by the United States and have been closing in on the Islamic State bastion of Raqqa.

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the USA, and the European Union, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a brief reconciliation period.

Aside from aspirations for autonomy, the Kurdish group in Syria is part of the US -led global coalition against the Islamic State militants who seized large swaths of Syria and Iraq in 2014.
