Google's Project Treble Might Actually Fix Slow Android Updates

And if you don't have a flagship phone, you're lucky to get an update at all. Google is aiming to solve this with "Project Trebble", which will modularize part of the Android OS to decrease the time OEMs spend updating their devices.

Treble is technically a vendor interface that sits between the Android OS framework and the device-specific, lower-level software written by chipmakers.

Android O is the foundation for the change, and it is being made in a manner to make the update cycle faster and affordable for the manufacturers. This is achieved by the introduction of a new vendor interface between the Android OS framework and the vendor implementation.

The bank last fall said that its employees opened up 2 million bank accounts without customer approval to meet unrealistic sales goals.

Google has unveiled a new system that aims to streamline vendor Android updates. "We knew that consistency of API was important for developers, so we created a compatibility program for the Developer API specified by the Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) and its associated Compatibility Test Suite (CTS), now comprising over a million tests".

Google's seeking to change this by taking the a similar approach to drivers and vendor customisations that they've taken to Android apps - building a stable and reliable compatibility layer.

Since the company is calling this a "modular base", it is likely that more bundles are coming to the base Android code. To this day, many devices have to wait several months after their Google device counterparts just to receive the next major version of Android.

"Today, with no formal vendor interface, a lot of code across Android needs to be updated when a device moves to a newer version of Android", Google wrote in the Android developers blog. It eliminates one step from the drill that would help the OEMs to deliver timely updates. It's called Project Treble, and Google says it's the "biggest change yet to low-level system architecture".

This isn't something that will be user-facing, meaning Project Treble isn't going to have any shiny new features or tools to play with as an end user.
