'King Arthur' flops, 'Guardians 2' still rules at box office

King Arthur centers around the mythical king and Jude Law as Merlin. With a budget around $175 million and less than $20 million on its opening weekend, the film is set to be a huge loss for the studio and has already triggered a slew of opinion pieces theorizing why the film is struggling. Instead, it eked out an estimated $14.7 million.

This weekend at the box office, two big new releases dominated headlines, with Amy Schumer's Snatched - in which she costars with the legendary Goldie Hawn - taking the lead in an unexpected turn!

According to Hollywood Reporter, King Arthur grossed $6.8 million on Friday, May 12, from 51 markets for an early three-day foreign total of $11.6 million.

It also forced USA producers to become more efficient, and they can now withstand much lower prices than just a few years ago. By cutting costs and boosting efficiencies, US shale has made itself capable of profitably producing $50 per barrel oil.

We start things off with a dramatic prologue that shows Arthur's father Uther (Eric Bana) using the mighty Excalibur to fend off the supernatural forces of an evil sorcerer. And the marketing didn't show audiences anything they haven't seen before, or couldn't see again if they stayed home and watched "Game of Thrones" instead.

But still... King Arthur completely bombed, to the point of almost making history as one of the worst big-budget openers EVER. Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) appears to be some sort of mash-up of Aladdin and Robin Hood with the added backstory of being raised in a brothel like Don Draper from Mad Men.

And a Hollywood insider added: "King Arthur has barely even been talked about on TV in the United States of America". "PECLB001453-topic.html" class="local_link" >Robert Downey Jr.

Of course, the actor went on to land the role and shaped up for the flick, and said of the pressure to look good: "It's all about balance of spectacle and substance and if there is balance I am happy to get my kit off". Snatched fell behind Schumer's Trainwreck, which opened to $30.6 million in July 2015. The movie business could be about to get very messy. I like them as much as the next fanboy, but we still need other blockbusters to offset the onslaught of superhero films. Over the past eight years, Warners had several competing Arthur projects in development until Ritchie's won out. In a statement by Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein, the Warner Bros. executive explained that "the concept didn't resonate with a broad audience and we're disappointed".

Releasing "King Arthur" in the shadow of "Guardians" may not have been the wisest move either, but at least the film will have all summer to try to recoup its budget.
