While a release date for the device has yet to be announced, HTC and Lenovo are developing headsets using Google's standalone platform.

Google has sunk more energy into turning around its low-to-middle tier Daydream VR experience, announcing a slew of partnerships relating to the virtual reality headset. New VR headsets will be based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 VR platform, running on light version of Android 7 Nougat which only runs Daydream.

Google also highlighted its next take on AR technology in the form of WorldSense, a positional tracking system that uses sensors in a VR/AR headset to work out a user's position in the real world with out the reliance on external sensor beacons or cameras.

New smartphones that will support Daydream include the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, which will get the required software update this summer.
