Congressional panels pledge thorough probe into Comey firing

Ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort and fired national security adviser Michael Flynn, are among the former campaign officials said to be of interest to federal investigators.

For example, two Trump cabinet members who were inside the closed-door meeting with the Russians challenged the New York Times and Washington Post accounts of it.

But the Flynn situation has been different, several officials and advisers said.

"I don't believe anyone in any way directed him", said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., "but in fact he wrote the memo".

So in the March 20 hearing, Comey reported what the Justice Department had authorized him to report about the Russian Federation investigation, and said no more. "What are you going to do?" Trump, however, told NBC News he was going to fire Comey regardless of the memo. According to notes kept by Comey, Trump first asked for his loyalty at a dinner in January and then, at a meeting the next month, asked him to drop the probe into Flynn.

In a statement, a White House official said: "We are confident that when these inquiries are complete there will be no evidence to support any collusion between the campaign and Russian Federation". Separately, another Times report said Trump had told Russian officials in a closed-door meeting at the Oval Office that firing Comey "had relieved great pressure on him". The Trump camp originally supported him. "He thinks everyone is out to get him". Spokespeople declined to comment further.

"From his time at DIA onward, I've heard really scary stuff", said Matthew Waxman, a top George W. Bush administration official now at Columbia Law School.

The Washington Post first reported the story Monday evening, citing current and former officials. Some staffers say Republicans are increasingly exhausted of defending Trump. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., would say when asked by reporters Thursday to weigh in on Trump's "witch hunt" characterization. He often immediately disassociates himself with people who become controversial, at least publicly.

To some who know Trump, the president's constant need to defend Flynn seems to be out of self-preservation.

"He proceeded to disclose details about the evidence; assert that the American people "deserve" to know details; declare that no "reasonable" prosecutor would file charges; and criticize Secretary Clinton", Rosenstein said in prepared remarks. "Are you able to assist in this matter?" one official said of the line of questioning from the White House.

"Think of it like a family that fights, not a group of politicals who throw each other under the bus", said the associate. "And so in a concern about divulging intelligence, they leaked actually not just the information from the meeting, but also indicated the sources and methods to a newspaper", McMaster said on This Week.

Other former campaign officials said it was hard to estimate how many staff members have been in contact with federal investigators.

"Not many people in the national security world were endorsing us", one campaign aide.

"I'm not going to let that distract from our efforts to see if we can engage with you, engage with Russian Federation, and identify areas where we might be able to work together".

The drama will linger for a few more days. But White House spokesman Sean Spicer has called the president's rhetoric part of his deal-making, contending that Comey had created "unnecessary pressure" on Trump's ability to negotiate with Russian Federation on a range of issues.
