Bourdais fractures pelvis, hip during Indy qualifying crash

Bourdais, a four-time Indy vehicle champion, sustained pelvic and hip fractures when he crashed into the Turn 2 SAFER Barrier during qualifying Saturday.

Sebastien Bourdais has thanked fans for their support following his season-ending crash in qualifying for the 101st Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, having undergone successful surgery.

Dale Coyne Racing says James Davison will replace Bourdais in the 18-the vehicle, which will have to start in the 33rd spot because of the driver change.

That auto will be driven in the 101st Indianapolis 500 by James Davison, who has driven for Coyne before.

The McLaren driver, who will not drive in next week's Monaco Grand Prix in order to compete in the famous American race, finished seventh with a four-lap average of 230.034mph.

Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso also said he was hoping for a quick recovery.

James Davison will fill in for Sebastien Bourdais at the Indy 500, according to Dave Griffiths of Fox59 and CBS4.

"Those 231mph laps were wonderful", said Coyne of Bourdais' opening two laps on his Saturday qualifying run. Several said it was one of the hardest hits they'd seen.

The team was led by Takuma Sato, who had the second-fastest time Saturday with a four-lap average speed of 230.382 miles per hour.

"He was doing even better than expected", Billows said of his visit with Bourdais on Sunday morning.

Ford Performance has begun its search for a replacement for Sebastien Bourdais after the Frenchman was injured in a wreck during qualifying for the Indy 500. He said it took his breath away. Bourdais also posted the fastest lap during the Fast Friday event, reaching a top speed of 233.116 miles per hour.

"We're certainly going to do the best we can with the time and equipment we have".

Bourdais will miss the rest of the IndyCar season due to the injuries and will not run in this year's Indianapolis 500.

Being among the fastest nine means the Spaniard, in the Honda 29, will compete for pole position on Sunday.

By 2015, British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson had died in hospital after an accident in a vehicle race in the United States. "He was still very fast today". Shortly before 15:30, organisers announced that qualification would begin at 16:01, with each entry being permitted one attempt at the four-lap qualification run to set the groups for Sunday's second day of qualifying.
