We must remember true meaning of Memorial Day

For many, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, and its solemn objective is often overlooked. With flowers in bloom and temperatures just right for getting outside, having picnics and firing up the grill, it's a time to take advantage of the weather. Think about that - this is a day to honor those who likely died a violent death to ensure that we could live our lives in freedom.

We can do this in so many simple, yet meaningful ways - attend a Memorial Day ceremony in your local community; visit memorials or cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of those fallen service members; pledge to help those widows and widowers, parents and children of the fallen. Of course, putting aside one day does not do justice to all those who have bravely fought throughout history.

I am always humbled by the observances held on this important holiday weekend, and admire the people in our own small communities who organize the ceremonies that honor those who gave their lives to our great country.

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday in May, honors men and women who died while serving in the United States military. But in the midst of it all we should never forget that many have died so that we can enjoy such pleasures. Memorial Day has its roots in the days and years immediately following the American Civil War. Not one to give up, Guerin convinced the US-based Veterans of Foreign Affairs (VFW) to take up the cause. In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day. The Moment of Remembrance would occur at 3:00 p.m. Since then, Arlington National Cemetery has become the customary destination for the president's Memorial Day speech. America's war dead comes from all walks of life and all kinds of jobs. They were able to point out gravesites of family members, veterans and loved ones who had passed away, some over 100 years ago.
