Japan Says Goodbye To PS3, End Shipping After 80M Units

An update on the official Japanese PlayStation website (spotted by Gematsu) indicates that production of the decade-old console in Japan has ceased.

Sony is yet to confirm the free titles for its gaming consoles for the month of June, but it is expected to happen as early as this week. Called the PS4 update 4.50, it introduced several enhancements and greater functionality such as the introduction of USB storage device compatibility. Because of this, Microsoft's Xbox 360 - which had launched a year prior to the PS3 - managed to stay ahead of Sony's system for the majority of the previous generation.

The PS3 memorably launched in November 2006 for the price of $499 for a 20 GB console and $599 for the 60 GB configuration. Still, the original announcement was listed on June 6, 2017.

AMD Details Ryzen Mobile, Threadripper, Radeon Vega, and Epyc at Computex 2017
As expected, AMD dished more details on the forthcoming ThreadRipper lineup, which tops out with 16 cores and 32 threads. It's clear that the industry and consumers were hungry for the innovation Ryzen has brought back to the PC market.

As of now, the official patch for the update are here as the update went live.

And of course, Sony suffered one of the most prolific cyber attacks in corporate history in 2011, when 77 million PlayStation Network accounts were compromised, forcing Sony to shut down the service for an unprecedented 23 days.

We also wouldn't rule out Sony including a couple more AAA titles in the coming months, but specifically, those which would benefit from the PS4 Pro features.

There have been some suggestions that PlayStation Plus could include PlayStation VR games at some stage in the future. Major retailers in Japan including the likes of Bic Camera, Yodabashi, and Sofmap have no new listings of the PS3 anymore, saying that new units of the console are no longer in stock.

Meanwhile, Sony has also revealed its sales figures during the financial earnings call. Other reports indicate that it will be shipping close to 18 million units of PS4. Sony also added, "PS3 shipment in the United States already terminated in Oct 2016". The said console is nowhere near its predecessor, PlayStation 2, which sold around 155 million and the newest PlayStation 4 is nearing 80 million as well.
