James Comey to testify June 8 on Russia investigation

Former FBI Director James Comey is expected to testify next week before the Senate.

Former FBI Director James Comey will testify in open session before the Senate intelligence committee next week, officials announced Thursday.

In one, he wrote that the president had requested he ease up on the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Michael Flynn, who served as Trump's national security adviser until he was ousted in February for lying about his contacts with Russian officials. Mark Warner, D-Va, said in a statement that Comey's public testimony will be followed by a closed session with the committee later that day.

The President said Mr Comey informed him three times that he personally was not under investigation.

Associates have said Comey wrote memos describing certain interactions with Trump that gave him pause in the months after the election, including details of a dinner in which Comey claimed the president asked him to pledge his loyalty, and a request to shut down the investigation of Flynn. Special Counsel Robert Mueller had to approve the Comey appearance, but some areas of discussion may be off topic out of concerns it could impede an ongoing investigation.

A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment.
