Turkey seeks end to Qatar crisis by end of Ramadan

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Saturday supported a peaceful solution to Qatar row and said Turkey would continue to take "constructive" steps over the resolution of the crisis.

The government of Qatar has hired John Ashcroft, the U.S. attorney general during the September 11 attacks, as it seeks to rebut accusations from U.S. President Donald Trump and its Arab neighbours that it supports terrorism.

"The nation of Qatar, unfortunately, has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level, and in the wake of that conference (the recent conference of Muslims countries in Riyadh that he attended), nations came together and spoke to me about confronting Qatar over its behaviour". "We have to stop the funding of terrorism".

Cavusoglu also said no country in the Gulf region should regard the deal concerning Turkey's setting up a base in Qatar as against itself.

While the official said that the president "believes that the issue can be "resolved on terms favorable to the United States and United States' interests", that official also added that, "I haven't heard him express concern about the issue of the base". They warned, however, that their ability to make longer-term plans was being affected.

US President Donald Trump has accused Qatar's leadership of bankrolling extremists and demanded a halt to that funding, drawing praise from Saudi Arabia and its allies.
