Northam wins Democratic nomination for governor

Most polls showed Gillespie with a double-digit lead before Election Day.

Polls opened this morning and will remain open until 7 p.m.

Virginia is one of only two states electing new governors this year, and the swing-state contest is likely to draw intense national scrutiny for signs of how voters are reacting to Trump's first year in office.

Two Democrats that previously had moderate records, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and former Rep. Tom Perriello, are fighting over who is the most anti-Trump. Observers initially expected it to be an easy win for Gillespie, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Here's a look at the issues and priorities that each candidate have articulated during the campaign.

Northam beat former congressman Tom Perriello.

Maute's husband, Cayamora, was arrested at a police checkpoint in the southern city of Davao on Tuesday. Colonel Arevalo added the "temporary setback" had "not diminished our resolve a bit".

Northam's campaign ran a more traditional campaign focused heavily on his biography - rural upbringing, Army veteran, pediatric neurologist - as well as his endorsements from key progressive groups that make up the Democratic base like teachers and abortion-rights groups.

Vogel said during a candidates' forum in Warrenton in May that she "wants to keep government small and taxes low", stem the flow of people leaving Virginia and roll back regulations.

"Politicians have to be straightforward", Northam said.

The polls on the Democratic side of the aisle have been all over the place.

Northam received endorsements early on from almost every top Democrat in the state, including McAuliffe and U.S. Sens.

The now razor-thin race has shades of the 2016 primary contest between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. He's courted reliable Democratic voters, saying he is the more pragmatic choice who can win in the general election.

Virginia is one of only two states electing new governors this year, and the contest could serve as a preview to 2018's midterm elections.

"Tonight, we celebrate, but tomorrow, the work begins anew", Northam said in a statement. Dominion Energy is backing the construction of one pipeline, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, and Perriello has been a vocal critic of the politically influential energy giant. Despite the higher participation Perriello had hoped for, he still fell short to Northam.

"All the national money and national attention will be coming this way", he said. The state pays for a recount if candidates are under.5 percent. The State Board of Elections certifies equipment for use in Virginia.

Justin Fairfax, an attorney from northern Virginia, won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor. If you care about our state and our future, I urge you to vote for him too.

On Tuesday, he barely defeated Corey Stewart, a former Trump state campaign chairman who made preserving Virginia's Confederate history a top campaign issue. He's now running a similar blow-up-the-system campaign.

"I don't know about you, but I'm inspired to keep fighting tonight", Perriello said. Turnout in 2013, when Dems had LG and AG primaries, was 152,076.

But it's unclear how much Stewart supporters will rally behind Gillespie. On the campaign trail, he has largely avoided talking about Trump, who has not weighed in on the race.
