OR first USA state to offer third gender marker on state IDs

In 2016, non-binary people won a victory in OR when Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Amy Holmes Hehn legally changed Jamie Shupe's gender. Following Shupe's win, at least 12 other people in OR and California have changed their gender designation to non-binary OR agender. Now, it's officially on Shupe's driver's license.

The state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which held public hearings to debate the issue, said they received little opposition to the policy change, according to the Oregonian newspaper.

Oregon's "X" category now allows people like Shupe to opt out of sex and gender on drivers' licenses, meaning that in emergencies medical teams will have to decipher their birth gender rather than having the information readily available.

The commission began considering the change after a state court a year ago legally recognized Jamie Shupe's nonbinary gender, making Shupe the first person in the nation to gain this status legally.

"I very much plan to head to the nearest DMV and ask for that ID to be corrected on July 3rd", Jamie Shupe said after Thursday's decision. Drivers can now choose if they're male, female, or x.

SALEM, Ore. And for Patch, the Portland resident who was granted a change to "agender" by the court, opting out of gender is the entire point. The rule, which takes effect on July 3, is a first for the U.S., David House, spokesman for Oregon's Driver and Motor Vehicles Division, or DMV, told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, India, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand and Nepal already recognize non-binary genders.
