Senate votes to strengthen sanctions on both Russian Federation and Iran

Senate votes to strengthen sanctions on both Russian Federation and Iran

The Senate passed the measure today by a vote of 98-2. Then it will be brought before US President Donald Trump, who will have to either sign or vetoit.

Corker told reporters that "I only have talked a little bit with" Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who testified twice this week that the White House would prefer "flexibility" to adjust Russian Federation sanctions as needed.

The measure looks to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for his country's alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and to make Iran pay a price for its "continued support of terrorism". However, he would have to reject new sanctions against Iran, which he supports, to derail the latest congressional effort to punish Russian Federation.

Linking the Russian Federation sanctions to Iran measures will make it more hard for US President Donald Trump to take actions to ease sanctions on Russian Federation and would prohibit the president from doing so without Congress' approval.

Both sides of the aisle came together in the Senate on Thursday to overwhelmingly pass legislation that puts new sanctions on Russian Federation while limiting President Trump's ability to remove them, the Hill reports.

The New York Times noted that, had the deal not passed, it would have been a "major embarrassment" for Trump just weeks after he traveled to Saudi Arabia and unveiled the agreement with flare.

A frequently polarized Senate has found common ground as Republicans and Democrats joined forces to approve a sweeping sanctions bill that uses an array of financial penalties to punish Iran and Russian Federation.

Obama's former secretary of state, John Kerry, had raised that prospect on the eve of the Foreign Relations Committee's vote on the bill last month.

The new Iran restrictions, which impose mandatory sanctions on people involved with the Islamic republic's ballistic missile program and those that transact with them.

Corker, too, sounded pleased that the bill effectively ties a president's hands when it comes to unwinding certain sanctions on Russian Federation. The measure also would apply terrorism sanctions to the country's Revolutionary Guards and enforce an arms embargo.

The question at the heart of the non-binding referendum has been asked of Puerto Rican voters before - four times, in fact. She is pro-statehood and is forming a "Friends of Puerto Rico Caucus" that would press for statehood.

"This bill will impose sanctions on Iran for its non-nuclear violations", Cardin said.

"We do project ourselves strongly into this issue, Congress does, the Senate does, but we also left flexibilities for them to be able to manage foreign policy", he said.

Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., voted against the sanctions package.

The legislation was loudly endorsed by Israel lobbying group AIPAC, and Sen.
