Tropical storm warning issued for Louisiana coast by the National Hurricane Center

Tropical storm warning issued for Louisiana coast by the National Hurricane Center

Today is the day that forecasters should get a better handle on what a tropical system nearing the Gulf is going to do.

The National Hurricane Center gives the storm a 80 percent chance for development over the next 48 hours and a 90 percent chance for development over the course of the next five days.

The hurricane center said conditions appear to be good for the low to develop slowly as it moves northwestward and into the Gulf early next week.

One system is located near the Yucatan Peninsula and portions of the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. The Hurricane Reconnaissance flight that was scheduled for Sunday afternoon was cancelled due to the system's general lack of organization.

While a strong system seems unlikely, the impacts to our area could still be significant given the amount of heavy rain that we have seen over the past few weeks.

The system is forecast to reach tropical storm strength on Monday.
