NYC subway train derails, scaring passengers and injuring 34

A subway train derailed Tuesday as it entered a station, tossing people to the floor, forcing hundreds of shaken-up passengers to evacuate through darkened tunnels and delivering another jolt to a transit system plagued by aging equipment and reliability problems.

Photos posted to social media show passengers walking along the tracks in a dark subway tunnel, using their phone flashlights as a guide.

After the emergency break was triggered, cars on a Brooklyn-bound A train dislodged from the tracks and hit a wall near the 125th St. station around 9:45am, said MTA officials.

Fire Department Commissioner Nigro gave reporters details on the injuries at the scene.New York City's subway system, which carries 5.7 million riders on a typical weekday, has come under increasing criticism in recent months for extensive delays and infrastructure in poor condition.

Danny said passengers pried the train doors open to get to another vehicle, which was pitch black and also had smoke.

The Riders Alliance, an organization of subway and bus riders in NY, blamed the derailment on the state's governor, Andrew Cuomo. "It was a smooth ride, then the train felt jerky. then it gets severe and I saw an explosion, the train comes to a stop - people start screaming", said Kelly Kopp, 48, of Washington Heights.

In addition to the nearly three dozen that were injured, about 500 people were forced to evacuate and walk through the smoke-filled tunnels to safety.

A report released earlier this month found that rush-hour cancellations and delays on the railroad are at the highest level in ten years.
