United States to admit 15000 additional temporary workers this year: DHS

Businesses can apply for the visas starting this week and foreign workers can stay employed from four to 10 months. There is a cap on the total number of foreign workers who may be issued an H-2B visa or otherwise granted H-2B status during a fiscal year. DHS Secretary John Kelly cited his congressionally granted authority to lift the visa cap and described the move as a way to help American businesses.

The Department of Homeland Security announced the decision on Monday, citing pressure from American businesses that contended that they were facing a shortage of workers. "We are going to continue to hit up Congress for more access to foreign workers because Americans want year-round jobs that come with benefits and we have a lot of seasonal business and need more access to labor".

He said the additional visas were a "one-time extension" of the visa cap set by Congress. USCIS will stop accepting petitions after September 15 or after the cap is reached, whichever occurs first.

DHS did not respond to a request for comment on how Trump's emphasis on American labor and his rhetoric toward immigrants might affect the recruitment of foreign workers. The program normally allows for 66,000 visas, split between the two halves of the year.

But there's been an outcry from employers in those industries saying they can't find enough workers right now, as they've been squeezed by a dearth of visas and the low unemployment rate.

But Congress did not renew the returnees exemption when it expired last fall, effectively curbing the number of available visas.

Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Sen. "Moving forward, it's important that the debate over H-2B is rooted in hard facts and the real-world experiences of small businesses owners doing everything they can make ends meet, not the misleading opinions of political pundits based in New York City and Washington who have never had to make payroll".

Trump issued a warning, Promising to stand up for American companies and their employees, that the U.S. would take retaliatory action against "unfair trade practices" by other nations, reports CNN.
