'I'm not going anywhere,' Tillerson denies resignation rumors

"I'm not going anywhere", Tillerson said after meeting with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. "At a time when the world is more interconnected than ever and we face constant cyber threats from state actors, it is vital that we retain a high-level diplomatic role to report directly to the Secretary on global cybersecurity".

The rumors of a pending "Rexit" were first spread around by CNN last week, when the network cited sources out of the White House in claiming that the top USA diplomat was frustrated with Trump's different viewpoints on important foreign policy matters.

Asked how long he plans to stay, he said, "As long as the president lets me".

Speculation about Tillerson's status was further fuelled after the State Department said Tuesday he had taken time off. Tillerson returned to his home in Texas for a couple of days but was back in the office by Wednesday.

Besides policy differences, the CNN wrote, Tillerson was fed up with Trump's recent attacks against US Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Asked about his relationship with President Donald Trump, Tillerson replied "It's good". Trump also has sided with Saudi Arabia in its feud with Qatar even as Tillerson has sought to mediate the dispute between the two U.S. allies.

He's referred to the top law-enforcement official in the last week as "beleaguered" and "VERY weak", fuming over Session's decision earlier this year to recuse himself from the probe into possible collusion between Russian Federation and members of the Trump campaign.

The former chairman of Trump's campaign also met in private with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday morning. He said that Trump wonders "What are you guys suggesting? Nothing else occurred", the statement said.

Some sources also suggested that Tillerson and Trump were at the opposing sides of the arguments when it came to recertifying Iran's commitment to the 2015 nuclear deal. "He recognizes that. He's deeply engaged in that work".

The State Department had previously denied the rumors, but Tillerson's remarks to reporters at the department were the first to address them directly. "So, he's entitled to take a few days".
