Oxford University employee hands himself in following brutal stabbing murder

An Oxford University employee and a U.S. professor suspected of killing a man in Chicago have been arrested.

Lathem surrendered to U.S. Marshals at the federal courthouse in Oakland and Warren walked into the San Francisco Police Department's Park District Station to turn himself in.

A US-wide police hunt was launched on Monday by Chicago Police Department for the 56-year-old Oxford University employee little over a week after he was reported missing.

Chicago police said in a statement: "We hope today's arrest brings some comfort for the victim's family". The men are awaiting extradition to IL on first-degree murder charges, CNN reports.

A day after the killing, a man who may have been Lathem made a US$1000 (NZ$1350) donation in the victim's name to a library in that town, police said.

Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago Police spokesman, said: "We got word within the hour that they have both been captured and are in police custody".

Warren, a Somerville College resident at Oxford University, was taken to the San Francisco County Jail.

Lathem, a 42-year-old associate professor at Northwestern, has been a much sought-after speaker on pneumonic and bubonic plague and has been published in top scientific journals.

The two men are suspected in the July 27 murder of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, 26.

Police have not said what they believe motivated the crime.

They will appear before an Oakland Court and be returned to Chicago where they will be interrogated by CPD homicide detectives.

Their relationship to Cornell-Duranleau is unclear, but Lathem and the victim are listed as friends on Facebook. "We are also thankful that this did not end in further tragedy". At the city's public library, one of the men made a $1,000 donation in Cornell-Duranleau's name.

Chicago authoritites have revealed on August 4 that a video has surfaced in which Lathem reportedly apologized to friends and family for his alleged involvement in Cornell-Duranleau's death.

"Cornell-Duranleau, who suffered multiple lacerations, was pronounced dead at the scene".

"There is no indication of any risk to the Northwestern community from this individual at this time", Cubbage added.

Lathem and Warren are awaiting extradition to IL.

"This is now a criminal matter under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and Northwestern University is cooperating in that investigation", its statement said.
