36 killed, dozens injured as trains collide in Alexandria, Egypt

The Health ministry is yet to announce the final toll.

It is not immediately clear had caused the crash, which saw the trains smash into each other head-on by the Suez Canal.

A train collision near Egypt's coastal city of Alexandria on Friday killed at least 36 people and injured 123 others, Egyptian officials said.

Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city, sits on the Mediterranean coast in the north.

Some 25 people are dead and 65 injured, it was reported. Rescue teams, meanwhile, continued to look for more bodies and injured passengers inside the carriages.

Some people are still stuck in the wreckage, a medical official told state television.

That accident came months after a train carrying military conscripts derailed, killing 17 people, and nearly a year after 47 schoolchildren were killed when a train crashed into their bus.

Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management.

In August 2006, at least 58 Egyptians were killed and 144 wounded in a collision between two trains travelling on the same track.
